Frailty
Review by Jason Gaston
I've seen some scary movies in my day,
but few have chilled me in the way Frailty has. This
movie made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end and actually
made me shout, "Oh SH*T!" out loud, not because I was startled by
something on screen but because the themes and content of this movie
made my blood run absolutely ice cold.
This is an
extraordinary motion picture that combines suspense and horror in a
new and disturbing way and makes a heck of a time for anyone who wants
to try to guess what exactly will happen next. I've got to say when I
saw Bill Paxton's name pop up as the director, I was a little shaken
but now I think he's done a hell of a job and would like to see more
work from him in the future.
Frailty is the story of obsession. Matthew McConaughey plays the
grown up son of Bill Paxton who, years ago, began receiving messages
from God to go out and destroy demons in human form. The father is
told to recruit his two sons (played by a couple of great kid actors,
by the way) to kidnap people from their homes and off the street and
to kill them in their shed.
The very idea of this movie makes my skin crawl even if the movie
shies away from any actual gore onscreen. This movie doesn't need it.
Probably the most chilling thing about this movie is that the father
isn't abusive and isn't really an evil man. He loves his sons and
would rather die then see them harmed. He's just a good man lost in
his delusions.
I highly recommend this movie. It's scary, chilling, dramatic, and
tragic at the same time. The movie weaves its way through a slow-paced
story with unexpected twists and a story so good that it doesn't have
to rely on formulas, cheap shocks, or horror clichés. This is just a
movie that slowly gets in your face and under your skin.
Abso-freakin'-lutely bone numbingly freakaziodian chilling.
