The Eye
Review by Jason Gaston
In the never amusing race for studios
to take decent Asian horror and make it stupid, we’ve now got an
American remake of The Eye, an extremely well shot and
plotted horror movie which is now, sadly, none of those things in
great measure.
The movie stars the
tragically untalented hottie, Jessica Alba, as the recipient of a
cornea transplant that allows her to see for the first time… the
trouble with that is the eyes she was given used to belong to a
psychic and now, she sees dead people and must follow the clues to
solve the mystery of whose eyes she’s seeing with.
I was already at a disadvantage as I sat through this movie having
already seen the fairly enjoyable import many years ago so basically,
I knew what was coming and nothing shocked me. Generally, though, I
don’t think this movie was capable of shocking anyone as the material
was pretty heavy-handed and telegraphed any plot twists ahead of time.
What’s worse, they changed the ending! They made it light, happy…
American. Basically, everything the original movie wasn’t.
God bless her too, Jessica Alba was just dead weight in this movie.
She’s like a set of rims on a car, nice to look at but useless in the
long run. No one can be this proverbially happy all the time. Even
when she’s under stress and scared out of her wits, it’s fake. .
I suppose I’m being a little unfair. The movie is entertaining enough,
but that’s the thing… it’s only enough. It never rises above an
occasional shock scare to communicate a genuine sense of horror or
fear… other than the fear that the movie doesn’t seem to know when to
end.
Eye was disappointed.
