Cabin Fever

Review by Jason Donner

When a bunch of college friends traipse off into the woods to smoke pot, drink, and have sex... inevitably, there's going to be a killer or two show up and hack them to pieces. But... imagine for just a moment that the killer was microscopic.

I'm talking viruses. Not just any virus, mind you... but the nastiest flesh-eating virus ever brought to the silver screen.

This virus is not alone, however... with it, it brings paranoia, suspicion, and fear. All teaming up into a lethal combination of a deadly disease known as Cabin Fever.

First, let me just say... this movie isn't going to be for everyone. I know I heard several dissenting opinions from frat boys and valley girls as I walked out of the theater... their tragically limited vocabulary churning up such classic phrases as, "That totally sucked!" and "That was so gay!" These poor people just can't grasp a movie that jumps genres between horror and comedy, I suppose unless a guy in a ghostface mask is sprayed with semen.

I don't even think I would try to explain irony to them.

Cabin Fever is half horror and half comedy... and not the afore mentioned semen/poop flinging comedy of Scary Movie, I mean comedy that is blacker than the blackest black there is. This movie is probably one of the funniest of the year...

...if, that is, you are sharp enough to get the joke.

Am I being condescending? Yes, I am. Nothing angers me off more than to walk out of a great movie that offers something different and have completely vacant lunkheads dismiss it as crap.

I'll say it now. This is a great movie, an excellent horror flick, a healthy helping of gore, and a load of dark laughs.

Cabin Fever is a terrific morality fable of what happens when you don't do the right thing.  At any point, any one of these idiots could have been saved if someone made an ethical choice - the result is tragic, like karma clicking its tongue at them.

Cabin Fever won't be for everyone, I admit. It is different and, thus, will confuse and frighten many. However, for those of you who like a little break from the clichéd formulas and horror mainstays, give Cabin Fever a try. It's fun, nasty, funny, and infectious as hell.

Catch it!
